I woke up this morning and went for a walk at 6am…
This past month has got me back on track, Thank you! 2 years ago I was well over 270 lbs. I lost the 70, but have been needing to lose the last 20 for over a year now.
I’m amazed at how easy it is to fall off the “healthy track” and start eating more fast food and take the easy way out. I lost all my weight by just eating better (Not a diet) and a little bit of walking. It’s time to finish this and get rid of these last few lbs.
All this month I’ve walked at least 20min a day and went from eating out once a day (either breakfast, lunch or dinner, sometimes all 3!) to eating out one-three times a WEEK and when I do eat out, I usually walk to the restaurant. Not only do I feel better, I’m SAVING MONEY! Woohoo!
Now my boyfriend and I are having a race to see who can loose 10 lbs by the end of next month. I’m going to win… He knows it too, just can’t admit to it…
Thank you Dr. Vik and everyone else that has helped get our butts and minds moving!

I decided to quit smoking! It has been 4 weeks as of yesterday!!! I am so proud to be able to say that. I stopped cold turkey after hearing how well Galen was doing with his quitting! He motivated me to make the change. Some things that helped was to drink lots of water!!! Also, replace the smoking with something else. If you have extra time on your hands, go walk or run! I continued my pilates everyday, and an hour of cardio avery other day. It kept me from having the extra time to ‘think’ about my craving. Although they are still present, the thing to tell yourslef is that YOU are so much stronger then the craving… Keep reminding yourslef of the positives, and by then, the craving is over. After awhile they are futher and further apart from eachother. I must admit, the quitting part had really messed with my digestive system, so healthy eating and vitamens are important. I kept making excuses as to why I ‘couldn’t’ quit… “life it too stressful” or “this will be my last pack”, but never made the attemp. Then realzed, life is always stressful, and NO, it will never be the last pack! When I walked into Dr. Vik’s office frantic ready to through away my pack, knowing I had to get them out of my hands soon or they would be more then likely to stay, if I was ready for this. All I could say was that, I’ll never be ‘ready’, but if I didn’t do it now… I dont know when I’ll be able to do it. Finding the courage is important. Some other changes I have made about 2 months ago is to no longer drink soda, or eat fast food. It’s been awesome! I have changed my life for the better, and I couldnt have done it without the support of my family here at work! I encourage all of you to make a change, because you have all of my support. To live and let live.

For health awareness month I decided to incorporate drinking more water as a daily commitment to stay hydrated, also getting out for walks around the buildings here on lunch breaks, getting enough rest before I get here, and cutting down on the portions of food I eat. Everytime I get a craving for something that is full of empty calories and no nutrition, I try to grab a bottle of water instead. =o)

My accomplishment for the month was to to stop drinking alcohol. So far so good.

I have stopped eating fast food and I donated all my sugar and fat-laden food to charity! So I was able to start with a clean slate! I started watching Dog the Bounty Hunter on TV and all the addicts reminded me of how I feel about sugary food. So I have cut it out and when I am tempted, I think that a recovering addict wouldn’t have “just one line of coke,” so why would it make any more sense for me to have “just one piece of cake?” I have also stopped eating processed, chemical-laden food and the best advice I have is: READ THOSE LABELS! You body is NOT a garbage can!

A little addendum to the above:
Do you know the tricks MSG plays on your body and the fact that food manufacturers can legally hide almost anything under the words “natural flavorings?” MSG tricks the body into not knowing when it is full AND triggers food cravings. They did a study with pigs and found that if they only put a little bit on their tongues, it caused the pigs to eat 50% MORE food throughout the day! I was amazed where I found MSG–frozen foods, snack foods, and even dry soups! Also beware of “100% natural” labeling as it MEANS NOTHING LEGALLY. Look for “Organic” (legally must be at least 80% organic) or “100% Organic” labels.
Mom was right: READ THOSE LABELS!!

I quit smoking on February 18th, 2007. I had bronchitis three times since I started working at Zappos and I was afraid that I had damaged my lungs permanently or worse I might have emphysema or CPOD because I coughed all time. The vision of walking around with an oxygen tank or smoking through a blow hole in my throat did not appeal to me. Not to mention how smoking takes it toll on the skin and accelerates the aging process. I quit cold turkey and I decided that I was going to turn the craving for cigarettes into my new addiction. I started walking the same day that I quit smoking and I feel better than I ever thought possible. I did not allow myself to think about the negative conotations for quitting smoking, like getting emotional or grumpy. I actually think that because I was so postive about the benefits of quitting that it has drawn more positivity into my life in all other aspects of my life. I call this phenomenom the Tao of WOW. It was Zappos that made me want to quit in the first place because I love my job and I could not afford to keep getting sick and risk not having my job. I know it probably sounds like alot of hooey to some but keeping positive will help you accomplish anything you want to accomplish. I want to thank everyone that encouraged me. That is way Zappos rolls and I want to give that encouragement right back to anyone who needs it. That’s what I mean by the Tao of WOW, it’s a self perpetuating energy that is infinite in what it can achieve. Thank you Zappos! And a big hug and thank you to you Uncle Vik

For the past 5 months I have been exercising more regularly, eating better foods, staying away from sugar and drinking less alcohol. On top of that I have been keeping that POSITIVE ATTITUDE going. It really works. I feel great! I have never been more happy in my life. As well I have had some bad news but because of all the positive and healthy things I have been doing I was able to take the news without falling apart and getting depressed. One day at a time.
Thanks Dr. Vik for your advice and encouragement!

May 15th was a big day for me! It was my 3 year anniversary and my 1st day as a non-smoker!
I am so grateful for the extra motivation that Health Awareness month brought on. It was exactly what I was waiting for in order to make this life altering change. I can not believe I was ever scared of life without cigarettes. They were a crutch to me for so long, I just an in awe of how much of my life (and health) I gave to them. I’ve gained extra time in my day and extra years to my life.
