May Health Awareness Re-Cap
By Dr Vik | June 12, 2007
It seems as though the Month of Health Awareness in May had a tremendous, positive impact for employees at Zappos.
People have started to think more positively, quit smoking, started to exercise, have lost weight, and taken many other steps on their way to increasing the overall health of their mind, body and soul. For specific feedback, you can see the 79 comments posted on www.drvik.com during the month of May.
In regards to food consumption, Sacheen and Niki have provided some interesting stats:
1. The chips category consumption has gone down 5%.
2. The candy consumption has gone down 40% (although Miss Patti confessed to not eating any more Hershey candy bars which may have skewed the count).
3. The 100 calorie snacks have gone up over 300% – Great Alternative!!!
4. The beverage consumption has remained the same yet a switch has bee made to Fruit 2-0.
5. The fruits and vegetables have also been a big hit.
6. The water consumption has also gone up.
7. The cinnamon roll/donut group is adamant about what they want and will not budge.
Over all, Mission Accomplished. The month has made those who were ready, more mindful and aware of their health.
Congratulations to everyone who participated and to those who have made some progress, no matter how small, for you are not only taking your lives to the next level but setting an example for others to follow.
Yours with Pride – Coach

I’m WoWed by this information! It’s great to see improvement and know that we’re making healthier choices. Of course it’s very difficult for all of us when you’re standing in front of that vending machine trying to decide what to pick =)

You know those 100 calorie packs aren’t as good for you as people think.
There is such a thing as good calories and bad calories.
The average person may not notice it, but there are people out there myself included that it makes a big difference for.
Usually if you are watching your weight, or trying to stay healthy, you better off preparing your own low calorie snacks out of ingredients you trust.
In those low calorie snacks one, you’ll notice they are usually really sweet, well that comes from the highly processed sugars you’re intaking. Second you’ll notice they are really thin and crispy. That comes from the countless times the materials that were used to make those snacks were processed. Which raises the glycemic index of all those items. So while the snack may only be 100 calories, the materials used in the snacks will be absorbed much faster into the body than you would want. You want your body to take its time with food, or it makes hasty decisions like turning it to fat instead of slowly using it for energy.
Now on the top of the list of ingredients in all of those 100 calorie packs is Enriched Flour. Which is the worst form of flours for the making of baked goods its the same flour used to make your wonderful white bread. Its absorbed into the body faster than almost any other grain, which means the body has to make a quick decision on how to use the nutrients. Will you burn it off while you walk around today, or will it say “lets just store it and use it later”. Its usually the latter.
If you made your own low calorie snacks out of all natural rolled oats, whole wheat flour and sugar substitute of choice, you would be in a much better position and actually feel like you have more energy during the day, thanks to the slow breakdown of the complex carbs you’ll be getting.
Just my two cents and experience from losing over 60 pounds in 4 months. I actually started gaining weight when I was eating the low calorie prepared foods in packages, so I stopped.
